In the early 1920s, frightening war debts, unrest, high unemployment and the burdens of the Treaty of Versailles characterised everyday life in Germany. In the face of these challenges, the US Army and the US Navy decided in autumn 1921 to acquire a German Zeppelin. At the end of 1921, they received authorisation to commission a new Zeppelin from Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH in Friedrichshafen - as part of the German Empire reparations payments to the USA worth 3,000,000 gold marks.
