Between Heaven and Earth

16.05.2014 – 20.07.2014

The ZERO group of artists belong to the most significant avant-garde movements of the last century. The artists presented, above all Otto Piene, Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker called for a new artistic beginning in post-war art in the late 1950s and 1960s.

They saw in the reduction of everything figurative, in the concentration on pure colour, and in the dynamic movements of light in space the only way out of the paralysing rigidity into which art had got itself. The main characteristic of this artistic movement lies in their turning to new types of materials, technical processes and expansion of the artistic space into hitherto unimagined spheres. Neither the desert, the sky, the sea nor the moon remained untouched by their concepts. With this approach ZERO changed the world of art and continues to influence it today.

Under the title ZERO - Zwischen Himmel und Erde (ZERO – Between Heaven and Earth) the exhibition singles out an essential aspect of this movement – overcoming the earthbound using artistic experiments with light and movement in space.

The exhibition combines the bright intense blue of Yves Klein, the gashed canvases of Lucio Fontana, the powerful nail sculptures of Günther Uecker with the impressive light and kinetic sculptures of Hans Haacke, Adolf Luther, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker.

The dynamism of the ZERO movement is characterised by an unbounded curiosity and desire to cross boundaries of every kind. In this respect the artistic movement of the mid-twentieth century resembles the spirit of the aviation pioneers.

Artists presented: Lucio Fontana, Hans Haacke, Yves Klein, Adolf Luther, Heinz Mack, Piero Manzoni, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker.

The exhibition has been conceived together with the ZERO Foundation, Düsseldorf, and would not have been possible without the generous support of the following lenders:
